Our Sunscreens

When you use Butterbean Organics you can be confidant that you are getting the highest quality, pure, and sustainable products that have been naturally sourced and healthy for both people and the planet. That is the Butterbean difference. Unrefined, certified organic, and fair trade oils impart antioxidant rich protection to the skin. Pure vitamin E from sunflowers nourish the skin with non-GMO and gluten free goodness. Our sunscreens use food grade organic coconut oil for added health and moisturizing benefits. Butterbean is run by a mama with a vision for a better world that starts with making everyday healthy choices.

What makes zinc oxide based sunscreen unique is the mode of action. Mineral sunscreens, unlike chemical sunscreens, create a barrier between your skin and the sun. They work by sitting on top of the skin and scatter and reflect UV rays. Butterbean uses a non-nano sized particle Zinc Oxide above 100 nm (the upper limit for nanoparticles). Scientific studies have shown that larger particles do not get absorbed into the skin and are therefore very safe.

Chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin to impart protection. Many harmful chemicals get absorbed into the body, including oxybenzone. The US Center for Disease Control found that 97% of Americans have this chemical in their blood. This ingredient is proven to disrupt normal hormone functions and should not be used on babies or children. Additional chemicals in sunscreens break down into free radicals or carcinogens. The Environmental Working Group, recommends to avoid spray sunscreens entirely. The ingredients in chemical sunscreens are not meant to be inhaled and can be extremely hazardous.

Quality standards do not stop with our ingredients. Our sunscreens are third party tested and fully FDA compliant so when we claim our sunscreens are SPF30, 80 minutes of water-resistance, and UVA/UVB, you know that we mean what we say!

Ingredients In Our Sunscreens

  • Coconut Oil

    Coconut Oil

Renowned for its nourishing effects on the skin. The antioxidant properties prevent burning, premature aging and oxidative damage. Coconut oil has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-protozoa properties. It also has naturally-occurring sun protection.

  • Zinc Oxide

    Zinc Oxide

A micronized powder from the earth. Zinc is used in sunscreens to provide a physical barrier between the suns rays and your skin. The zinc oxide used at Butterbean is non-nano, meaning the particles are large enough not to get into the blood stream.

  • Organic Neem Oil

    Organic Neem Oil

Our Neem oil is cold pressed, which means heat is reduced to a minimum throughout the batching of the raw material, never exceeding 90°. This process helps retain the beneficial qualities of the plant. The oil has a light garlicky smell that insects do not like. Azadirachtin is the most active component.

  • Meadowfoam Seed Oil

    Meadowfoam Seed Oil

  • Vitamin E

    Vitamin E

  • Beeswax

    Beeswax

Our beeswax is sourced locally from a beekeeper named Brian. He has been keeping bees since 1992. Beeswax seals in moisture on the skin and helps make our sunscreen more water resistant. Its sweet fragrance is part of the pleasant Butterbean scent.
