Why do I need to shake Simple sunscreen?
Our sunscreen is a natural product and some separation can occur between the zinc oxide and the oils. Shaking before use helps to suspend the zinc in the matrix so that it will provide proper coverage to protect you from the sun's harmful rays.
What's the skinny on Butterbean sunscreen?
Butterbean is chemical and preservative free. It provides broad spectrum protection from UVA and UVB rays. Water-resistant for at least 40 minutes. It is moisturizing, effective, and easy to apply. It is recommended to reapply sunscreen to dry skin every 1-2 hours and after swimming.
Is Butterbean sunscreen waterproof?
No sunscreen is 100% waterproof. Water-resistant means that the sunscreen retains its original SPF after 40 minutes in warm moving water; very water resistant means after 80 minutes. Laboratory testing has provided the data that all of our sunscreens are very water resistant for 80 minutes! Please remember to reapply after swimming.
Are Butterbean Sunscreens tested for SPF, water-resistant, and Broad Spectrum claims?
Yes! Our products are FDA compliant and have been tested on human subjects with FDA approved laboratory procedures. Our product claims are SPF30, 80-minutes of water resistance, and UVA/UVB.
How do I apply Butterbean Sunscreens?
Butterbean sunscreens are third party tested to ensure an SPF of 30. SPF is dependent on the proper application of the sunscreen. In the FDA SPF test, approximately a full ounce of sunscreen is used to cover an adult body. It is important when using mineral sunscreens that you apply enough sunscreen to cover the skin well. Applying half the amount of sunscreen can leave you with a significantly lower SPF. Remember, mineral sunscreen sits on the surface of the skin. If the sunscreen is rubbed off by towel drying, sand, surf, sweat, or other, protection will be decreased. Apply a thick layer and rub in. Reapply at least every 2 hours!

Why is Butterbean sunscreen targeted to children?
We feel that children are the most susceptible to the dangerous chemicals contained in many sunscreens because they are still growing and developing. Children are our future and we want them to have all the advantages in order to make the world a better place. With that being said, chemicals are not good for anyone. The formula used in Butterbean sunscreen is great for people of all ages!
Will Butterbean sunscreen make my skin look white?
Depending on your skin type, mineral sunscreens can leave a white hue. If you rub the sunscreen in that will go away. One of the benefits to this type of barrier protection is that it is easier to see that proper coverage has been achieved. We think a little white is better than red later on :)
Is Butterbean sunscreen greasy?
Butterbean rubs in smoothly and is easily absorbed. Coconut, Olive, and Jojoba oils are known for the ability to penetrate the skin without leaving an oily feel. Butterbean makes an excellent non-greasy moisturizer.
How does Butterbean sunscreen respond to fluctuations in heat and cold?
If Butterbean is left in your car on a hot day it can become very soft. This should be avoided in an effort to extend the shelf life. If temperatures are around 65 degrees F or lower, the sunscreen can become very hard. Once it is applied to warm skin it will become spreadable again.
How long will your sunscreen stay fresh?
Chemical Preservatives are not used in Butterbean sunscreen. Butterbean is anhydrous meaning no water is contained in the product, and the oils we use are stable. An expiration date will be stamped on your container. Our products are good for 2 years. Also, keep in mind that water, dirt, etc… in the container will introduce bacteria and could affect shelf life.
Why is the color of my sunscreen different from my last order?
The ingredients in Butterbean are minimally processed. Sometimes, the beeswax will impart a richer yellow hue than other times. This is completely normal and does not affect the sunscreen at all!
Is Butterbean tested on animals?
No! We have cats, rabbits, chickens, fish, frogs and whatever else comes knocking at our door wanting to be fed and loved. We heart animals: )
Is Butterbean sunscreen and Bug-a-boo bug spray safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
According to our research and under the approval of a certified herbalist, the ingredients used in our products are safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Neem oil used externally is okay during pregnancy. Lemongrass and Peppermint are at acceptable levels for children and pregnancy. We always recommend doing a skin patch test if allergic reaction is a concern. Please check with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns and before using this product on infants.
Is Bug-a-boo bug spray effective against ticks?
Bug-a-boo has not been tested against ticks. Our own testing shows that it helps to repel ticks, but we do not recommend reliance on our bug spray to protect you against lyme disease.
Can I use Bug-a-boo on my pets?
Yes, the amount of Neem oil used in our bug spray should not affect pets adversely. Essential oil use in cats is controversial. Ask your veterinarian before using on your cat. There are not many studies done on how much Neem oil can be ingested before it becomes toxic. Results show if large quantities are ingested daily it can be detrimental. The effects are mostly on reproduction and are not permanent. The effects disappear when the animal stops ingesting the oil. Using our bug spray on your pets is safe, though not advised on a pregnant animal (since they will most likely ingest it).
