How To Use Organic Sunscreen with Other Facial Products

Sunscreen is important for protecting your skin and reducing your chances of skin cancer. But for many individuals, sunscreen isn’t the only product they put on their skin. If you’re using makeup, serums, or creams on your face, you might be wondering how to use your organic sunscreen alongside these skincare items.

In this article, you’ll learn why sunscreen is important for your skin and get tips for applying it with your favorite facial products.

Why Is Sunscreen Important?

You’ve probably heard that sunscreen is very important for your overall health, but did you know that sunscreen can decrease your risk of skin cancers and skin precancers by 50 percent? According to the Skin Cancer Foundation , regular daily use of SPF 15 can cut your risk of developing melanoma in half. It also prevents premature skin aging such as wrinkles, sagging skin, and age spots. And of course, it reduces your chance of sunburn (which speeds up the aging process and increases risk of skin cancer).

Everyone should use sunscreen. This includes children over 6 months old. Sunscreen should also be used daily, since skin damage by the sun is something that happens over the course of our lives, and can harm our skin even if we do not burn.

Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours or after you’ve been swimming or have been sweating.

Sunscreen and Your Skincare Products:
What Goes On First, Sunscreen or Moisturizer?

If you’re someone who wears makeup and other facial products, you can (and should) wear sunscreen along with your favorite skincare line. When it comes to using moisturizer, it actually doesn’t matter which product you put on first, whether it’s your sunscreen or moisturizer. However, what does matter is that the sunscreen is SPF 30 or higher, is a water-resistant broad-spectrum sunscreen and that it is applied 15 minutes before you’re going to be outside.

So while some decide to put their sunscreen on first, others prefer to put their moisturizer on before the sunscreen. Ultimately it’s your decision on what works and feels best.

Sunscreen and Your Makeup

Sunscreen should always be applied before makeup. Simply rub a small amount of organic sunscreen onto your face, making sure to also cover those easy-to-forget places such as your hairline and jawline. Then apply your makeup as you normally would. By using organic sunscreen, your skin won’t be left feeling oily or greasy.

If you’re someone who thinks you don’t need sunscreen because you’re wearing makeup, think again. Makeup does not protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun, which is why it’s crucial to wear sunscreen daily.

How to Reapply Sunscreen Over Makeup?

Reapplying organic sunscreen throughout the day over your makeup might feel intimidating, but it doesn’t need to be. Simply apply the sunscreen again on your face and touch up with makeup as needed. Try using a sponge when reapplying the sunscreen to your face so as not to make a mess of your makeup.

If you’re going to be in the sun for an extended period of time, you might want to consider removing some of your facial products/makeup and reapplying the sunscreen directly onto your skin.

Can You Mix Serum with Sunscreen?

Just like with makeup, you should apply sunscreen to your face before applying any serums. It’s never a good idea to mix sunscreen directly with serum, but you can apply both to your skin. If you have specific concerns or questions, you should speak with your dermatologist.

How Do I Put Sunscreen On My Skincare Routine?

As mentioned above, putting on sunscreen before or after your moisturizer is a personal preference. But when it comes to your makeup, sunscreen should always be applied first. If you have any concerns about combining your sunscreen with prescription facial products, you should speak with your dermatologist for instructions.

Do You Need Water-Resistant Sunscreen?

Yes, it’s important that when using sunscreen to apply water-resistant sunscreen (which is recommended by dermatologists). Note that waterproof sunscreen does not exist. Water-resistant sunscreen, however, tells you how long the sunscreen will stay on wet (and therefore, how often you should reapply).
